How Can I Optimize My Breastfeeding Journey?

How Can I Optimize My Breastfeeding Journey?

Many mothers experience some sort of challenge when it comes to lactation and supply. Whether it is fear, low-supply, over-supply, or no-supply at all. Here are some reliable links to help guide you on your breastfeeding journey.

Personally, when I began breastfeeding, I remember planning to go all in. Meaning, I was not afraid, and I was ready to take on the challenge. Little did I know that my baby would be in the NICU for an additional 3 days after birth. This took a toll on my supply-levels. Especially as a new mom; One never knows the ins-and-outs of milk supply. I wish I had known about these resources below, and I hope they can heighten your journey to new levels! If I had to do it again, my personal tips include

    1.Pump early, pump often

Start pumping around 36/37 weeks pregnant to stimulate your mammary glands for milk supply. Even if you do not see anything come out-just trust the process! After it gradually starts coming out, collect your colostrum and save it into newborn safe syringes and freeze them. Take them to the hospital with you and feed them to your baby when they are born and ready to feed. You will be so glad you did it!

  1. Skin-To-Skin

I wish I had more skin-to-skin time with Jonah. I know that would have helped so much!

  1. Pump, pump, pump.

I know it's exhausting and sometimes painful, but do not give up! Your body is like a business, and if the demand for milk is high, supply will follow suit.

  1. Hydrate!

I was so thirsty while breastfeeding! Make sure you are drinking adequate amounts of water.

-3 things to keep in mind when increasing your supply according to La Leche League:

  1. Skin-to-skin contact with baby
  2. Nurse frequently
  3. Breast compressions to maximize feeding time for your baby
